Orange Technology issues alert on cyber-crime

Whitehorse – March 16, 2016

Orange Technology, Yukon’s most advanced IT solutions provider issues an alert on cyber-crime.

“Over the past two days, a number of Yukon computer networks have become infected with malicious encryption viruses, and digital data held for ransom”, says Martin Lawrie, Vice President at Orange.

“Ransom-ware, as it’s known in the industry, is a type of malicious software very similar to a computer virus that encrypts the infected computer’s hard drive and locks the user out of all the data. Once that data is encrypted, the user is asked to pay a ransom through an internet payment site, which can vary from several hundred to several thousand dollars”, explains Martin Lehner, Orange Technology’s cyber-security expert. “Outside of paying the ransom, it can be extremely difficult if not virtually impossible to decrypt the affected data”.

“Today alone we received multiple requests for support from new clients who had been infected”, says Lawrie. “Most often, these infections come from opening malicious e-mail attachments. For some reason, it appears that Yukoners are being specifically targeted based on information we’ve been able to gather from some of the infections, which is something that’s relatively new. Usually these types of attacks are more generic and internet-wide as opposed to being specifically focused on the Yukon”.

“There are many forms of ransom-ware out there and it can be difficult to protect yourself from every variety”, notes Lehner. “The most important protection for your data is a diversified, comprehensive backup solution. That said, computer network security is quickly becoming one of the top concerns when it comes to internet related activities and world-wide connectivity”.

Yukoners are reminded to be cautious when opening attachments and visiting web links from suspicious e-mails. If in doubt, always verify the authenticity of the content with the original sender by alternative means.
